FSW Cutibacterium Acnes Propionibacterium Acnes Microbiology Questions

FSW Cutibacterium Acnes Propionibacterium Acnes Microbiology Questions

Description

Instructions

You now need to discuss a few more things about your pathogen (cutibacterium acnes/propionibacterium acnes) BASED ON what you studied in Chapters 5, 6 and 7. Make sure all of your responses are in your OWN words, not cut and pasted from the internet.

This is to help you relate lecture content to a real-life PATHOGEN. Hit reply and complete your answers. Copy the questions so it is easy to read and follow. You will not see other answers until you have posted your assignment. Please remember that other students are reading your work, so spelling and effort counts.

Start by including your Pathogen name: (spelling and format count)

Chapter 5

Carbohydrate: (glycolysis, fermentation, Krebs cycle with or without an electron transport chain and alternative pathways to glycolysis are all ways bacteria get their energy requirements)

  1. Glucose Metabolism. Which type of metabolic pathway is preferred for glucose metabolism? (1 point)
  2. Aerobic, Anaerobic or Fermentation. Does your pathogen use oxygen as a final electron acceptor in the electron transport chain? OR If not, name the final electron acceptor that is used to make less ATP. OR Does your pathogen rely solely on fermentation to regenerate the NAD+? (2 points)

Protein and Lipid Metabolism:

3.Are there any specific enzymes your pathogen has for identification (examples include catalase, decarboxylase, dehydrogenase and any other identifying enzyme pathways for your bacteria)? If yes, name them. If no, explain further. (3 points)

Chapter 6

  1. Biological Molecules. How does your pathogen obtain the requirements to build its biological macromolecules? (You are discussing where your bacteria gets its basic requirements for the elements of life – carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur. Basically the nutritional requirements, not specifically each element individually). (2 points)
  2. Oxygen requirements for your pathogen. Is it a facultative anaerobe, an obligate aerobe, an obligate anaerobe, microaerophile or aerotolerant anaerobe? (1 point)
  3. How does your pathogen deal with the toxic effect of oxygen? (Check this information from lecture since toxic forms of oxygen occur as a part of metabolism. Name the enzymes discussed in lecture if your pathogen has them). (1 point)
  4. Temperature. Discuss temperature requirements of your pathogen. Explain which main class of temperature it falls into (hyperthermophile, thermophile, mesophile, psychrotroph, psychrophile) and why. (2 points)Chapter 7
    1. Name two methods of control of growth for your pathogen in a patient with the disease and when confronted with the pathogen outside of the host. Be careful to specify if it is a physical method or a chemical method (check lecture to differentiate these two). Control of growth means how would you deal with an infection related to a person as well as how would you minimize the presence of the bacteria on a surface or object. (2 points)
    2. Finally, you need to go and post two sentences on 3 other students’ posts. In your comments compare how your pathogens may be similar and different, at least one for each. Make sure you put the student’s name, their pathogen’s name, and your pathogen’s name in your comments. (2 points per correct comment) A bonus point will be awarded for a comment that includes a correction for an error (i.e. a student states something like their organism, with an optimum temperature of human body temperature, is a hyperthermophile when you know that is not correct)
